Inhalt: When the pianist Francesco Piemontesi heard an unreleased recording of the pianist and composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, it came as a shock to him. The freedom of his playing, the colours and nuances, the virtuosity, which is always presented with a smile, overwhelmed him. He decided to explore what he thought he was hearing here: the alchemy of the piano. Together with director Jan Schmidt-Garre, Piemontesi embarked on a journey to older colleagues who could give him information about these secret elements of piano playing. He travelled to Maria João Pires in Spain, to Jean-Rodolphe Kars in a French monastery and to Stephen Kovacevich in London. He was inspired by the opera singer Ermonela Jaho to sing on the piano and by conductor Sir Antonio Pappano to transfer the colours of the orchestra to the piano. Finally, he visited his old teacher and mentor Alfred Brendel. And even Rachmaninoff, who died in 1943, is suddenly very much alive again...
